Can Personal Trainers Give Nutrition Advice?

(And What You Should Listen To)

If you’ve ever worked with a personal trainer, you’ve probably heard advice like this:

“Just go low carb."

”Try intermittent fasting.”

“Cut out sugar and dairy, it worked for me.”

But here’s the thing, most people don’t realise:

Most personal trainers are not qualified to give detailed nutrition guidance.

So… What Can a PT Legally Do?

In the UK, a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification allows someone to:

✅ Give general advice around healthy eating

✅ Support clients with fat loss or muscle gain goals through behaviour change

✅ Suggest food strategies in line with public health guidelines

It does not qualify them to:

❌ Prescribe specific meal plans or supplements

❌ Diagnose issues like gut health, intolerances, or hormone imbalance

❌ Offer therapeutic nutrition advice (e.g., for PCOS, diabetes, thyroid issues)

Yet, that doesn’t stop people from doing it. And that’s a problem.

Red Flag: Overstepping the Line

Unfortunately, the fitness industry is full of well-meaning PTs who are way out of their lane. You’ll see:

  • PTs dishing out complex macros and meal timings with no formal training

  • “Online coaches” giving gut protocols or cutting plans for women with no cycle

  • Advice that sounds sciencey… but comes from a YouTube rabbit hole

At best, it's ineffective. At worst, it can cause serious harm, especially for clients dealing with stress, disordered eating, or health conditions.

So, Who Can You Trust?

Here’s the breakdown:

Personal Trainer (Level 3): Basic general advice only. Most PTs fall into this group.

Nutritionist: This is an unregulated title. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, even without formal qualifications. (Yes, really.)

Registered Dietitian (RD): This is a protected title in the UK. Dietitians are trained in clinical nutrition and are legally qualified to treat medical issues via diet.

Precision Nutrition Coach (like me): This sits in the middle, we’re formally trained in nutrition science, coaching, and behaviour change. Not doctors. Not dietitians. But equipped to help most people sustainably lose fat, build muscle, or feel better, safely and ethically.

What I Can Help With (And When I’d Refer You On)

As a certified coach with a Precision Nutrition qualification, I can help you with:

  • Building sustainable fat loss strategies

  • Creating structure around meals, weekends, and social eating

  • Understanding hunger, portion control, and calorie density

  • Navigating alcohol, stress eating, and snacking

  • Protein intake, food quality, and macro alignment

But if you’re dealing with:

  • IBS, PCOS, diabetes or thyroid dysfunction

  • Suspected eating disorders

  • Digestive symptoms you can’t explain

I’ll always refer you to a dietitian. Because that’s what good coaching looks like: knowing your limits and staying in your lane.

Final Word

If your trainer is giving you blanket meal plans or telling you to “just cut gluten and sugar”, it’s probably time for a second opinion.

Nutrition is powerful, but it’s also nuanced. You deserve advice that’s informed, not improvised.

If you want sustainable results and guidance from someone who understands the science and the psychology, I’m here to help.
